CIVILIZATION CREATION 101: BORROWING, STEALING, AND RE-INVENTING THE WORLD YOU KNOW INTO THE WORLD YOUR CHARACTERS INHABIT

Presenter: Beth Daniels, aka Beth Henderson, J.B. Dane, Nied Darnell

Writers of contemporary and historical fiction have it easy. They use the world they already live in or the historic one that can be researched for details.

Science fiction and fantasy writers have to rethink everything and alter it to suit their storyline, or build a far more involved world for a series, and yet keep themes and elements that will be recognizable to their readers. A happy reader is a reader who doesn’t feel lost…whether you give them a map or not.

This month consider what sort of elements are necessary and what is not required. Look at all the options available that you can pick and choose from. Things considered will be utopian, democratic, feudal, dystopian governments and life under those governments, religions and their importance or unimportance in your society, the social strata, laws and traditions, and more!

Come build a world – not necessarily one you’d like to live in but one that will challenge and endanger your characters through quite a lot of words!

BIO: Beth Daniels took the easy way out for the first 25 years of her career as a novelist before deciding there were more challenges and thrills in creating her own worlds. As a result she has more than one project on the drawing board in the realm of fantasy with a Weird West trilogy, two urban fantasy series, and a Fae/time travel trio mix. All of which required some civilization shifting to create the stage upon which the stories play out.
