Add Depth to Your Novel with Mythic Elements
Because they encompass timeless motifs, mythic elements can add an extra layer of depth to a novel, whether contemporary, historical, paranormal or fantasy. Mythic elements have contributed to the success of many stories from Star Wars and The Princess Bride to O Brother, Where Art Thou, Troy, and Raiders of the Lost Ark trilogy. During this four week course we'll examine some metaphoric functions that help build emotional resonance and memory.
Course overview and objectives:
Through illustration, exercises, and resources we'll discuss:
The connections between external geography and 'internal' landscapes and examine how geographical landscapes can become mirrors.
The symbolic power of setting as mirrors and maps including mirror resonance in art and music.
We'll discuss the emotional resonance of 'soul language' with a look at how images act as metaphorical mirrors, or conduits, to learn a new language of the spirit that expresses timeless, universal motifs.
Metaphors and symbols build truth in allusion and echoes that build powerful connections. We'll look at these echoes found in metaphor, symbols and illusions of our personal history, literature, scripture, folk-tales, songs and culture. |
